Каля дзесяці кіламетраў ад Слоніма, уверх па рацэ Шчары, знаходзіцца старая вёска Жыровічы, вядомая вялікім архітэктурным ансамблем былога ўніяцкага манастыра. На сённяшні дзень ён з’яўляецца найбуйнейшым і адзіным праваслаўным комплексам такога тыпу ў Беларусі.
Першапачатковыя драўляныя забудовы манастыра не захаваліся. На іх месцы ў 1672-1828 гадах быў створаны новы комплекс каменных будынкаў. А напрыканцы XVII стагоддзя Жыровіцкі манастыр лічыўся самым багатым у Беларусі і Літве.
Манастыр узнік на месцы, дзе, паводле падання, у 1470 годзе цудоўным чынам з’явіўся абраз Маці Божай, названы Жыровіцкім. Манастыр быў заснаваны ў канцы XV стагоддзя як праваслаўны. У 1613 годзе перайшоў у рукі базыльянаў (манахі грэка-каталіцкай Царквы), якія адрадзілі культ Маці Божай і зрабілі манастыр галоўным цэнтрам Уніі. Першым ігуменам манастыра ў часы Уніі быў Іасафат Кунцэвіч. Намаганнямі базыльянаў за часы Уніі быў узведзены вялікі манастырскі комплекс з мураваных храмаў барочнай архітэктуры. У 1730 годзе ў прысутнасці дзясяткаў тысяч католікаў візантыйскага і лацінскага абраду, а таксама іншых вернікаў, цудатворная ікона Маці Божай з Жыровіцкага манастыра была ўрачыста каранавана залатымі папскімі каронамі, а Маці Божая Жыровіцкая абвешчана апякункай і заступніцай беларускага народа.
У 1810-1828 гадах манастыр быў рэзідэнцыяй Брэсцкай уніяцкай епархіі, у 1828–1839 гадах – Літоўскай уніяцкай епархіі. У 1839 годзе Іосіф Сямашка, карыстаючыся падтрымкай царскай улады і заступніцтвам самаго расійскага імператара Мікалая I, перавёў частку манахаў Жыровіцкага манастыра ў праваслаўе, а ўпартых адправіў на выпраўленне ў спецыяльна прызначаныя для гэтых мэтаў манастыры, у тым ліку па-за межамі Беларусі.
Дзякуючы таму, што да верасня 1939 года Жыровічы не ўваходзілі ў склад СССР, манастыр ніколі не закрываўся. У міжваенны час манастырскі храм-Кальварыя (царква Узвышэння Святога Крыжа) знаходзіўся ў карыстанні рыма-католікаў.
У 1945 годзе ў Жыровіцкім манастыры былі адкрыты пастырскія курсы, якія ў 1947 годзе былі ператвораныя ў семінарыю. Але ж семінарыя праіснавала толькі да 1963 года.
У другой палове 1980-х-пачатку 1990-х гадоў пачалося адраджэнне манастыра. І ў 1989 годзе, пасля 26-гадовага перапынку, аднавіла працу Мінская духоўная семінарыя ў Жыровічах.
Сёння манументальны будынак семінарыі фарміруе парадны двор перад апсідай сабора. Каля ўсходняга крыла семінарыі – вялікі прамавугольны гаспадарчы двор, абкружаны аднапавярховымі карпусамі. На другім плане на паўднёвы ўсход ад сабора размешчана камерная па маштабу Багаяўленская царква. Ва ўсходняй частцы манастыра, як завяршальны элемент яго прасторавай кампазіцыі, на самым высокім месцы пабудаваная вертыкальная Крыжаўзвіжанская царква – вышынная дамінанта ансамбля.
Успенскі сабор заснаваны ў 1613 годзе, як галоўны храм манастыра базыльян. Спачатку пабудаваны ў стылі барока (будаўніцтва завершана ў 1650 годзе). З паўночнага і паўднёвага ўсходу да манастыра прымыкаюць малыя цэрквы Пакрова Прасвятой Багародзіцы і Раства Іаана Прадцечы. У галоўнай частцы сабора першапачаткова меліся дзве вуглавыя вежы, характэрныя для ўніяцкіх храмаў. Пры рэканструкцыі ў 1828 годзе вежы разабралі. У межах асноўнага аб’ёму захавалі тольк іх ніжнія ярусы. Сабор набыў рысы класіцызму. Былі зменены дэкор, форма светлавога барабана і купала. У галоўным фасадзе выкарыстаны матывы візантыйскай архітэктуры.
Высокае майстэрства разьбяроў выявілася ў апрацоўцы іканастаса пазалочанай разьбой у стылі барока (ракавіны, гірлянды, херувімы, арнамент ў выглядзе вінаграднай лазы і лісцяў). Жывапіс іканастасу адносіцца да таго ж часу (XVIII стагоддзе), калі назіралася схільнасць да павышанай эмацыянальнасці, дэкаратыўнай пышнасці і маляўнічай сюжэтнай кампазіцыі. Такой жа трактоўкай вызначаецца і галоўная алтарная ікона „Маці Божая Жыровіцкая” (разьба па каменю, XIV-XV стагоддзі), узятая ў чаканны срэбны аклад. Бакавыя двух’ярусныя алтары выкананы ў XIX стагоддзі. Іх кампазіцыя будуецца на аснове карынфскага ордэра з абмежаваннем дэкаратыўнай арнаментыкі.
Акрамя іконы „Маці Божая Жыровіцкая”, з якой звязана паданне аб узнікненні манастыра ў 1470 годзе, да сярэдзіны XIX стагоддзя ва Успенскім саборы таксама захоўвалася „Жыровіцкае евангелле” (другая назва рукапісу – „Евангелле Сапегі”) – вядомы беларускі помнік рукапісу і кніжнай мініяцюры XV стагоддзя…
Сёння, як і ў мінулыя стагоддзі, у Жыровічы заўсёды ідуць вернікі з усіх куткоў свету, а таксама турысты. Жыровічы малявалі вядомыя мастакі, фатаграфавалі і фатаграфуюць фотамайстры з розных краін, здымаюць фільмы і тэлеперадачы.
Найбольш пакланяліся Жыровіцкай Іконе Божай Маці беларусы на эміграцыі, якія пасля Другой сусветнай вайны пакінулі Беларусь. У 1947 годзе Аляксандр Асіпчык у Германіі арганізуе Беларускае Жыровіцкае праваслаўнае брацтва. У Баварыі ён выдае сваю кніжку „Цудатворны абраз Жыровіцкай Божае Маці і Жыровіцкі манастыр”, а таксама яе сам афармляе. Адначасова з кнігай Аляксандр Асіпчык выдае некалькі паштовак, прысвечаных Жыровіцкаму манастыру. У Германіі ў 1948 годзе выходзіць паштоўка „Жыровіцкі сьв. Успенскі манастыр”, выдадзеная Жыровіцкім брацтвам на сродкі Аляксандра Асіпчыка (паштоўка № 1). Ён жа ў Германіі ў 1948 годзе выдае і паштоўку „Зьяўленьне цудатворнага абраза Маці Божай Жыровіцкай 1470 г.”. На адваротным баку напісаны тэкст лацінкай на беларускай мове, (паштоўка № 2). Аляксандр Асіпчык выпускае ў Германіі і паштоўку „Рэстаўрыраваны абраз Жыровіцкай Божай Маці – апякункі беларускага народа” (1948 г.) (паштоўка № 3).
У 1970 годзе ўсё той самы Аляксандр Асіпчык супольна з Жыровіцкім брацтвам выпускае ў ЗША яшчэ дзве паштоўкі. Гэта паштоўка „Вясёлых сьвят” (паштоўка № 4) з выявай Маці Божай Жыровіцкай і з радкамі Якуба Коласа, а таксама паштоўка „У Жыровіцкай пушчы над Шчарай” (паштоўка № 5). На адваротным баку напісана гісторыя з’яўлення Іконы Божай Маці.
Напачатку 1950-х гадоў свет пабачыла і паштоўка „Жыровіцкая Божая Маці – апякунка беларускага народу”. Паштоўка выйшла ў Брысбэне, а выдала яе Задзіночанне беларускіх ветэранаў (паштоўка № 6).
У 1960-я гады ў Брадфардзе Управай БАПЦ і па ініцыятыве Янкі Калбасы была выдадзена паштоўка „Маці Божая Жыровіцкая – Патронка Беларусі” (паштоўка № 7). Выйшла ў двух колерах – у чырвоным і сінім. На першай старонцы змешчана выява Маці Божай Жыровіцкай, а на развароце – верш Вінцука Адважнага.
Згуртаванне беларускіх жанчын у гонар асвячэння царквы ў 1960 годзе ў ЗША надрукавала паштоўку „Жыровіцкая Божая маці – Апякунка беларускага народу”. Выдавалася і некалькі яшчэ беларускіх паштовак на эміграцыі, прысвечаных Жыровічам.
На беларускай мове ў Беларусі ў пачатку 2000-х гадоў Слонімскі касцёл Святога Андрэя выпусціў паштоўку „Маці Божая Жыровіцкая”. На адваротным баку паштоўкі надрукавана малітва да Маці Божай Жыровіцкай і кароткая гісторыя з’яўлення Іконы.
У Германіі ў Берліне ў 2011 годзе гродзенскія краязнаўцы выпусцілі серыю паштовак, прысвечаных Беларусі. На слонімскай паштоўцы адлюстраваны Спаса-Праабражэнскі сабор, Сынковіцкая царква, помнік-леў у Альбярціне і Успенскі сабор у Жыровічах.
У 1999 годзе Слонімская друкарня выпусцілакамплект паштовак „Слонім” слонімскага фатографа Уладзіміра Янушэвіча. Сярод слонімскіх паштовак у камплект увайшла і паштоўка, на якой адлюстраваны Успенскі сабор у Жыровічах.
У 2004 годзе Слонімская друкарня выпусціла новы камплект паштовак „Слонім” фатографа Уладзіміра Янушэвіча. Сярод паштовак была і паштоўка, прысвечаная Жыровічам. На ёй адлюстраваны праваслаўныя храмы Жыровічаў.
Здаецца, больш беларускамоўных паштовак, прысвечаных Жыровіцкаму манастыру не выдавалася. Цяпер, праўда, таксама шмат выдаецца паштовак пра Жыровічы, але ў асноўным яны на рускай мове.
