„Bawoły” w Puszczy Białowieskiej

Bydło Hecka

W latach pięćdziesiątych ubiegłego wieku kilka razy usłyszałem od mieszkańców Białowieży, że pod koniec wojny i tuż po wojnie polowano w Puszczy Białowieskiej na… bawoły. Byłem wtedy dzieckiem, więc nie do końca wiedziałem, jakie zwierzęta żyją w okolicznych lasach, podejrzewałem, że bawoły na tym terenie raczej nie występują. Tłumaczyłem sobie, że pewnie chodzi o zdziczałe woły, które kiedyś uciekły chłopom do lasu. Słyszałem bowiem od babci, że jeszcze w czasach carskich, a nawet podczas I wojny światowej, do prac polowych i pociągowych używano w Białowieży właśnie wołów. Nie była to jednak dla mnie na tyle ważna sprawa, bym zadawał sobie trud jej rozwikłania. Szybko zapomniałem o białowieskich „bawołach”. Dopiero, gdy zetknąłem się z określeniem „bydło Hecka”, zaczęło mi w głowie świtać, o jakie bawoły chodziło.

To nic innego, jak rezultat prowadzonych przez braci Lutza i Heinza Hecków eksperymentów nad odtworzeniem wymarłego jeszcze w początku XVII wieku tura – zwierzęcia silnego i agresywnego, które dawniej często było mylone z żubrem. Swoje eksperymenty bracia rozpoczęli w okresie międzywojennym – jeden w Berlinie, drugi w Monachium. Wierzyli święcie, że w piersiach każdej krowy bije serce tura. Krzyżowali więc byki hiszpańskie z najbardziej prymitywnymi rasami bydła szkockiego, korsykańskiego i węgierskiego. Uzyskane osobniki w jakimś stopniu przypominały wymarły gatunek, ale nim nie były. Charakteryzowały się mocnym umięśnieniem, masywnym ciałem i takimi też rogami. Ich ciężar wynosił około 600 kg. Zwierzęta były odporne na chłód.

Wielu naukowców oczywiście podśmiewało się z doświadczeń Hecków. Jednak po dojściu nazistów do władzy (1933 r.) patronat nad tymi eksperymentami objął marszałek Hermann Göring, naczelny łowczy III Rzeszy. Prace nad odtworzeniem tura nabrały przyspieszenia, finansowane były ze specjalnego funduszu SS. Nazistowski aparat władzy dopatrywał się w „odtworzonym turze” symbolu germańskiej siły. Göring szykował się już do polowań na „tura”. Kilkakrotnie zapraszał Lutza Hecka na łowy do Puszczy Rominckiej.

W 1938 roku Lutz Heck, za zgodą Göringa, wypuścił kilkanaście „turów” na wolność właśnie w Puszczy Rominckiej.

Wziął się też za żubry, które wydały mu się nieco zdegenerowane. Postanowił dodać im nieco witalności poprzez krzyżowanie z bizonami. Nad żubrem zawisło poważne niebezpieczeństwo. Po pewnym czasie okazało się, że uzyskane w Schorfheide krzyżówki nie wyglądają ani jak żubry, ani jak bizony. Heck oddzielił więc samice krzyżówek i jeszcze raz krzyżował je z samcami żubrów. W końcu stado żubrów i krzyżówek urosło do 200 sztuk. Heck, choć nie było do tego żadnych powodów, triumfował, twierdził że „pragermańskie zwierzę” zostało odtworzone.

W styczniu 1942 roku Lutz i Heinz Heckowie przyjechali do Białowieży, gdzie zainteresowali się prowadzoną tutaj od 1936 roku przez prof. Tadeusza Vetulaniego regeneracją tarpana leśnego. W rezultacie tej wizyty, do Niemiec wywieziono w latach 1942-1944 aż 32 koniki, które trafiły do ogrodów zoologicznych w Berlinie, Monachium i Królewcu.

Do Puszczy Białowieskiej, uważanej przez nazistów za „najlepiej zachowany starogermański las” (sic!), przywieziono natomiast w 1942 roku pierwszą partię fałszywych turów. Później trafiały tutaj prawdopodobnie kolejne sztuki, zarówno samce jak i samice. Zwierzęta te trzymały się głównie północnej części Puszczy.

Mieszkańcy Puszczy Białowieskiej nie bardzo wiedzieli, co to są za zwierzęta. Ktoś rzucił nazwę „bawół”, inni ją podchwycili i tak już zostało. O „bydle Hecka” w owym czasie na tym terenie nikt nie wspominał. Nic też nie wiedziano o eksperymentach dokonywanych przez braci Hecków. Ci, którzy podczas okupacji pracowali w administracji leśnej, mówili tylko tyle, że zwierzęta te przysłał do Puszczy Göring.

„Bawoły” dobrze się czuły w puszczańskim środowisku. Miały pod dostatkiem soczystej trawy. Wychodziły często na łąki, które nie były koszone, gdyż większość okolicznych wsi została wcześniej przez Niemców spacyfikowanych. Dawały sobie znacznie lepiej radę, niż zwyczajne chłopskie krowy. Mogły bytować samodzielnie, bez opieki.

Tutejsi mieszkańcy zaczęli kłusować na „bawoły” już pod koniec okupacji niemieckiej. Zwierzęta nie były płochliwe, na widok człowieka nie uciekały, tak jak np. jelenie. Broń kłusownicy przechowywali w lesie owiniętą w jakąś szmatę w dziupli w drzewie. Mięso tego dziwnego zwierzęcia było podobno bardzo smaczne. Solono je i przechowywano w drewnianych beczułkach, nazywanych na tym terenie „raszkami”.

Znacznie przetrzebione „bydło Hecka” służba leśna spotykała w Puszczy Białowieskiej także zaraz po wyzwoleniu. Natomiast sztuki, które były trzymane w berlińskim ogrodzie zoologicznym, zostały wybite podczas szturmu miasta w 1945 roku. Zachowały się natomiast sztuki hodowane w Monachium, ale później zostały one rozesłane do innych krajów, trafiając m.in. do Holandii i Wielkiej Brytanii.

Pracując w Białowieskim Parku Narodowym, miałem możliwość przejrzenia niektórych dokumentów z pierwszych lat po wojnie, przechowywanych w zakładowym archiwum (obecnie znajdują się one w Archiwum Państwowym w Białymstoku). Nieoczekiwanie natrafiłem na korespondencję z 1946 roku, w której wspominano o fałszywych turach Hecka. Bardzo mnie ona zainteresowała.

To były dwa listy. Pierwszy, datowany 4 maja 1946 roku, został napisany w Krakowie przez prof. dra Władysława Szafera, delegata ministra oświaty do spraw ochrony, i był skierowany do dra inż. Jana Jerzego Karpińskiego, dyrektora Białowieskiego Parku Narodowego.

Profesor pisał: „W związku z uzyskanymi wiadomościami, że w obrębie Puszczy Białowieskiej mają znajdować się jeszcze 3 okazy turów, których regenerację podjęli Niemcy, będę wdzięczny Panu Doktorowi za udzielenie mi informacji jak się istotnie powyższa sprawa przedstawia. W wypadku stwierdzenia obecności turów wydaje mi się, że byłoby wskazanym ich zabezpieczenie, o co ewentualnie uprzejmie Pana Doktora proszę”.

Dyrektor Karpiński odpowiedział prof. Szaferowi po dziesięciu dniach wyjaśniania sprawy. Jego list, skierowany do Państwowej Rady Ochrony Przyrody w Krakowie, został napisany i wysłany 14 maja 1946 roku (znak: 272/2). Oto jego treść:

„W uprzejmej odpowiedzi na powyższe wyjaśniam, co następuje.

W końcu października 1944 r., gdy objąłem ponownie zarząd Białowieskim Parkiem Narodowym, doszło do mojej wiadomości, że na terenie Puszczy Białowieskiej przebywa jeszcze 8 z 12 wypuszczonych przez Niemców do Puszczy bawołów. Oczywiście, zrozumiałem, że chodzi tu nie o bawoły, lecz prawdopodobnie o regenerowane tury z puszczy Rominckiej (co później zostało potwierdzone oficjalnie). Zbierając dokładne dane, gdzie one przebywają, ustaliłem, że ostoją ich jest po stronie polskiej nadleśnictwo Browsk, o ile przechodzą granicę ze strony białoruskiej. Interweniowałem zaraz u b. Dyrektora D[yrekcji] L[asów] P[aństwowych] inż. Pruszkowskiego, by:

1) wydał natychmiast zlecenie pobudowania prowizorycznej zagrody w tym nadleśnictwie, do której możnaby zwabić zwierzęta;

2) by D.L.P. wyznaczyła specjalnego strażnika do stałego śledzenia za ruchem zwierząt, który by w razie zjawienia się ich po stronie polskiej, zajął się zwabieniem ich do przygotowanej zagrody. Znalazło to wyraz w punkcie 10-tym protokułu z dn. 4.XI.44 r. (…)

Na skutek późniejszych wypadków (nieporządki w nadleśnictwie Browsk, aresztowanie przydzielonego do zwierząt strażnika, wywędrowanie zwierząt na czas dłuższy za granicę) postanowienia powołanego protokułu nie mogą być realizowane. Dopiero w r.b. otrzymałem wiadomość, że w nadleśnictwie Browsk zwierzęta pojawiły się zza granicy, lecz tylko w ilości 2 sztuk. Zawiadomiłem natychmiast o tym Urząd Łowiectwa oraz D.L.P. (…), interweniując, by postarać się je schwytać. Nie można było i tego wykonać, gdyż zwierzęta zaraz wywędrowały z powrotem za granicę.

Wobec takiego stanu rzeczy należy przypuszczać, że nie uda się nic zrobić, by ocalałe jeszcze sztuki uchronić od zagłady, jaka prawdopodobnie spotkała już resztę osobników stada”.

I tak pewnie się stało, bo odtąd nikt już „bawołów” w Puszczy nie widział. Warto zwrócić uwagę, że dr Karpiński wspomina o przywiezieniu do Puszczy tylko 12 sztuk zwierząt. Z innych natomiast źródeł wynika, że było ich na tym terenie trochę więcej. Na przykład Mikołaj Romańczuk (zob. „Niva” nr 47/2015) twierdzi, że w pobliżu Masiewa żyło ich około 40 sztuk.

Oczywiście dzisiaj trudno będzie ustalić dokładną liczbę „bawołów” przywiezionych do Puszczy Białowieskiej. Z pewnością nie obejdzie się w tym przypadku bez penetracji archiwów niemieckich – być może trud ten ktoś kiedyś podejmie?
