Zanim zamknę okiennice w domu bardzo przyzwoitych państwa Matysiaków w Hajnówce, w którym mieszkaliśmy z moim bratem Borysem na stancji jako uczniowie gimnazjum w latach 1945-1946, skreślę kilka słów o swojej rodzinnej, kochanej Białowieży.
Jak wiadomo, po wkroczeniu w 1941 roku wojsk hitlerowskich do Białowieży wszystkie szkoły powszechne – bo wtedy tylko takie były – zarówno polskie jak i rosyjskie zostały zamknięte. We wszystkich szkolnych budynkach mieściły się koszary i restauracje, przeznaczone dla niemieckich oficerów i żołnierzy. W drugim roku szkolnym została otwarta prywatna szkoła pani Raisy Wolskiej, do której uczęszczaliśmy z bratem. A w ostatnim roku szkolnym białowieski nacjonalista otworzył podstawową szkołę białoruską, część klas której mieściła się w budynku byłego sklepu. Budynek ten po wojnie został przez właściciela sprzedany.
Wracając do prywatnej szkoły pani Wolskiej – mieściła się ona na posesji właścicielki, która znajdowała się na nieużytkach, prawie nad brzegiem Narewki, na tyłach obecnego hotelu „Białowieski”. Jeśli chodzi o program i naukę w tej szkole, to według mnie, doświadczonego pedagoga, były one dalekie od doskonałości. W szkole uczyły się trzy grupy. Do pierwszej uczęszczali pierwszoklasiści, do drugiej, mojej, trzy roczniki – 1929, 1930 i 1931. Tak że ja, młodsza od mojego brata o dwa lata, znalazłam się z nim w jednej klasie. Ja skorzystałam na pewno, bo po II klasie szkoły powszechnej zacząć matematykę od ułamków było trochę za trudno. Ale na szczęście był Borys, który mi trochę pomagał. Przyznam, że zadania domowe ściągałam od niego, bo innej rady nie było. Zajęcia w tej szkole odbywały się trzy razy w tygodniu. Język niemiecki stał na wysokim poziomie.
O szkole pani Wolskiej wspomniałam nieprzypadkowo. Starsi rdzenni mieszkańcy Białowieży wiedzą dokładnie, że Raisa Wolska, bułgarska hrabianka, była osobą niezwykle utalentowaną. Znała kilka języków obcych. Potrafiła szyć nie tylko palta, ale i suknie. Zajmowała się pracami w ogrodzie, jak było trzeba, to wzięła też do ręki siekierę. Dom – piękną, genialnie zaplanowaną willę, wykonaną z deseczek, bo tylko na to było ją stać po ucieczce z ZSRR, zbudowała sama. Ogród, sad i park w jednej postaci, wspaniale na tych nieużytkach rozwiązany, mógł posłużyć za przykład nie tylko dla mieszkańców Białowieży.
Po wyzwoleniu, mając za sobą dwie klasy szkoły powszechnej i dwa lata prywatnej szkoły okupacyjnej, wróciłam do swojej przedwojennej szkoły. Okna mojej szóstej klasy wychodziły na okazały gmach, w którym mieściła się poczta. Niestety, chyba już nikt nie będzie miał przyjemności wyglądać przez te okna. Moja stara szkoła, nie remontowana od lat, popadła w ruinę. Ilekroć obok niej przechodzę, z przykrością spoglądam na jej gnijące podwaliny.
W szkole podstawowej na ogół radziłam sobie nieźle. Problemy były jedynie z językiem polskim, gdyż nie było odpowiedniego nauczyciela. Przyjechał wprawdzie jakiś pan, nie stary i nie młody, bardzo niskiego wzrostu – mierzył jakieś 160 cm, a może i mniej, „ponudził” nam przez dwa miesiące i wyjechał. Przezywaliśmy go „Pimpuś”.
Po ukończeniu szóstej klasy postanowiłam kontynuować naukę w gimnazjum w Hajnówce. Przystąpiłam do egzaminu wstępnego z matematyki i języka polskiego. Z matematyki zdałam, a język polski oblałam. Na klasyfikacyjnej radzie pedagogicznej w mojej obronie wystąpił katolicki ksiądz Władysław Hołodowski. Powiedział: „Proszę przyjąć tę laleczkę, to dobre dziecko”. Dowiedziałam się o tym już po maturze od mojej wychowawczyni, pani profesor Pelagii Ponieckiej.
W gimnazjum początkowo uczyłam się średnio. Dobre i bardzo dobre oceny miałam jedynie z języka francuskiego i biologii. Dobrą uczennicą zostałam dopiero w starszych klasach, przed maturą. Za postępy w nauce otrzymywałam nagrody książkowe.
W pierwszej klasie gimnazjum, jak już wspomniałam, mieszkaliśmy na stancji. Dom państwa Matysiaków był bardzo duży, mieścił sporo lokatorów, tak na parterze, jak i na piętrze. Ja, Borys, Miszka i rodzeństwo K. zajmowaliśmy obszerny kuchnio-pokój na parterze. Stały tutaj trzy łóżka chłopców. Ja i Marysia K. spałyśmy w sypialni państwa Matysiaków. Marysi nigdy później już nie spotkałam. Z jej bratem, zażartym wrogiem Polski Ludowej, spotkaliśmy się w 1956 roku w Warszawie, na jakimś zebraniu. Wtedy był on już… wielkim działaczem PZPR.
Wróćmy jednak do naszego pokoju na stancji. Była w nim malutka kuchenka, na której, po powrocie ze szkoły, gotowałam każdego dnia obiad, głównie dla siebie i brata. Wybór produktów miałam niewielki. Pod dostatkiem było jedynie ziemniaków i kaszy jaglanej. Pół kilograma słoniny, kupionej w Hajnówce, kroiłam zawsze na sześć kawałków, żeby wystarczyło na cały tydzień. Do tego miałam jeszcze jakąś szklankę masła i, czasem, biały ser. Po te produkty Borys jeździł co tydzień ciuchcią do domu rodzinnego w Białowieży. Pociągi na tej trasie nie kursowały, gdyż hitlerowcy, uciekając w 1944 roku przed Armią Czerwoną, pocięli szyny na kawałki o metrowej długości.
Jedzenie otrzymywane z domu było skromne z uwagi na to, że gospodarstwo rodziców podczas wojny zostało dotkliwie zniszczone. Świnie zabrano, a dwa piękne konie zamieniono na dwie stare klacze. Biała, syberyjska klacz padła już po dwóch miesiącach, a czarna, niemiecka, rasy belgijskiej – po jakimś roku, na szczęście zostawiła piękne kasztanowe źrebię. Borys je odchował. Źrebak tak się do niego przyzwyczaił, że po wyjeździe brata na studia stęskniony Derbik, gdyż tatuś tak go nazwał, przybiegał o określonej godzinie do ogrodzenia, czekając na pociąg, którym brat wracał ze szkoły w Hajnówce.
Produkty, po które Borys jeździł do Białowieży, przywoził w koszyku. Jedzenie to starałam się dzielić tak, żeby przede wszystkim brat nie był głodny. Tę zasadę przejęłam od mamy. Widziałam bowiem, że jedzenie podawała ona w pierwszej kolejności domownikom, a na końcu sobie.
Prawdę mówiąc, w Hajnówce czułam się zawsze na poły głodna. Do wszystkiego jednak można się przyzwyczaić. Pewnego razu, w sobotę, Borys wyjechał po chleb, a ja zostałam na stancji nawet bez jednej kromki. Nie dramatyzowałam. No cóż, zdarza się, tłumaczyłam sobie. W niedzielę rano postanowiłam trochę dłużej poleżeć w brata łóżku, bo w sypialni państwa Matysiaków spałam na nieco przykrótkim posażnym kuferku, tak że moje stopy zawsze wystawały spod przykrycia. Obudziłam się. Głód dawał się we znaki piętnastoletniej uczennicy. Nie wytrzymałam i przed południem udałam się do cioci Niusi, siostry mojej mamy. Niestety, ciocia nie poczęstowała mnie jedzeniem. Tak na pewno nie postąpiłaby moja mama, ona zawsze przyjmowała rodzinę czym chata bogata.
Do domu wróciłam gdzieś około godziny trzynastej. Zamknęłam okiennice. Zapadła ciemna noc. W poniedziałek rano był już koszyk z chlebem.
